Prefaces and title pages of seventeenth and early eighteenth century fiction acknowledged this pattern: histories could declare being romances, but threaten to relate real events, as inside the Roman à clef. Other functions could, conversely, declare for being factual histories, nevertheless earn the suspicion that they had been wholly invented.??
